課程概述

This course is intended to provide a basic appreciation of the overall picture of the Austronesian language family for students who have some knowledge of one or more Austronesian (AN)languages. Elements of this overall picture include (l) an overview of the geographical, cultural, demographic and historical background to the AN language family, (2)a survey of major subgrouping hypotheses and the evidence for them (3) a brief survey of the typological variety of AN languages, (3) an introduction to the reconstruction of Proto-Austronesian (PAN) and Proto-Oceanic (POC), with particular attention to morphology and syntax, and (5) selected topics in Austronesian syntax.

Course requirements:

l. three library research reports, each 5-6 double-spaced typed pages, and accounting for 20 % of the course grade,
2. one term paper 15-20 pages long, accounting for 40 % of the course grade.
